San Jose Costa Rica Butterfly Garden

Spirogyra Butterfly Garden is a small piece of paradise within walking distance from the busy streets of San Jose Costa Rica. Spirogyra boasts being located in the last forested part of the city known as a “green oasis”, one of the few places in San Jose where people can learn about butterflies up close and personal.

Spirogyra is NOT the biggest butterfly garden, but as far as having the feeling of walking in a garden with hundreds of butterflies flitting about feels very Natural at this very well landscaped piece of butterfly heaven.

From the outside, Spirogyra looks like any ‘grandmothers’ house, but once you walk through the gates to the garden, you wish your grandmother had a butterfly garden like this. There’s even forest pathway ‘loop’ outside the garden where you may run into a sloth or two.

All the major Costa Rican butterflies are represented at Spirogyra, especially the ever popular,
Morpho peleides whose scales refract the light in blue tones as a sexual stimulus to others of the same species. Underneath it’s wings, it camouflages itself in dark brown colors with multiple eye spots.

Bring your cameras and make sure your memory card has room because photo ops are down every pathway at Spirogyra Butterfly Garden and Farm.
