Volcano Turrialba is one of the most active volcanoes in costa rica and very underrated, most of us will visit arenal and Rincon de la vieja, poas, but Turrialba somehow left behind.
TURRIALBA VOLCANO LOCATION: The Turrialba Volcano National Park is located 24 km northwest of Turrialba. His name was decreed in 1955. Their maximum height is about 3340 meters above sea level and share the same base with the Irazu Volcano, so often identified as twin volcanoes.
HOW TO GET AND DIRECTIONS TURRIALBA VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK :
From highway (ruta ) 10 of Cartago you need to head to road ( ruta ) 230 heading to PACAYAS keep driving until La Pastora , than you take left and climb up in a dirt road of 15 k”m , drive safe and pay attention to potholes on the road, we strongly advice a 4wd, once you head all the way up you will see the a café Danza con Nubes and you will be close to the entrance of the park.
The walk hike to the crater takes up to 4 hours, you will reach about 3,300m.
WHAT TO BRING TO Turrialba:
1.make sure you have enough food and drinks, there is almost no shops close by, otherwise you will pay high prices in the few places around.
2. enough fuel, don’t make the mistake we did, make sure you come with full tank!! The nearest gas station is in PACAYAS almost 40km away , we didn’t know that fact and head to cruise our way down in natural as we were almost empty on the gas.
3. Bring GPS and an extra map, when its misty you can easily lose the way and reach a dead end or a private farm. It happened to us just due to the fact that we missed a turn and trusted the GPS too much.
If this happens to you, ask the locals for help, they are very kind and nice and they pointed us into the right direction.
4. Do a warm up before starting to walking up the crater, wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing, use a sunscreen or umbrellas and make sure you have enough water and some fruits or snacks. In addition, you can include a raincoat just in case it might rain(usually in the afternoon)
Last thing please Respect nature, don’t leave your trash behind, don’t take any plants or flowers with you, respect this amazing eco-system.
